A wonderfully moody album from singer Helen Merrill – recorded with backing by pianist John Lewis, in an overall feel that's got some of the styles that Lewis forged with the Modern Jazz Quartet! The tunes are familiar ones, mostly, but arranged in a style that's got wonderfully sad and somber touches – really bringing out the best of the dark qualities in Merrill's vocals. Backing is by a quartet with Lewis, Richard Davis, Hubert Laws, and Connie Kay – and titles include "Close Your Eyes", "I Didn't Know What Time It Was", "The Singer", "Yesterdays", "How Long Has This Been Going On", "Mad About The Boy", and "Django".

A nice late 70s set from Helen Merrill, with wonderfully spare accompaniment from Dick Katz, Mel Lewis, Joe Puma, Rufus Reid and Pepper Adams. She's still sounding great at this later point in her career, with her relaxed, coolly delivered vocals floating nicely above the group's crisp backing. Eight standards fill out this set nicely: "It Ain't Necessarily So", "Embraceable You", "I Can't Be Bothered Now", 'Summertime", "I Got Rhythm", "I Loves You Porgy", "My One And Only" and "Someone To Watch Over Me".

A great little album by Helen Merrill – one of her hippest of the 70s! The icy cool vocalist runs through a moody set of tracks with backing by a Japanese trio that includes Masahiko Sato on keyboards and Motohiko Hino on drums. The whole thing's got a great late-night feel, and the best cuts have a soulful groove that you might not hear on some of Merrill's other records. The highlight of the album is a great version of "Maiden Voyage", and other tracks include "Black Coffee", "Season Of Our Love", "I Remember Clifford", and "Waltz For Debby".
