The new Doxy Records Sonny Rollins recording Road Shows, vol. 3 will be released May 6.
Over the span of his storied and still-unfolding 65-year career, Sonny Rollins has established himself as one of the giants of jazz — a towering influence, a trailblazer, a powerfully creative force in the music. From his earliest masterpieces, such as Saxophone Colossus and Freedom Suite, to his Road Shows archival series of live performances for his Doxy label in the 2000s, Rollins has presented his peerless music without compromise — and to consistent international acclaim.
The new CD contains six tracks recorded between 2001 and 2012 in Saitama, Japan; Toulouse, Marseille, and Marciac, France; and St. Louis. “Patanjali,” a striking new Rollins composition, is given its debut recording.

Sonny Rollins 的 24K金
GZS-1057 Sonny Rollins and the Contemporary Leaders
樂手陣容有 Sonny Rollins、Hampton Hawes、Barney Kessel、Leroy Vinnegar 及 Shelly Manne，加上第4軌有 Victor Feldman 的 vib，1958.10.20~22 由Roy DuNann 這位天王級錄音師操刀，更彰顯這張唱片的『純正血統』。
所謂『純正血統』，當然是指我的口味偏好，不過這張唱片，無甚有重刻版本問市，小弟手上也只有上圖這個版本，這個版本就是美國加州 DCC 公司所發行，1994.4 由 Steve Hoffman 所重刻，並用所謂 24K金材質當 CD 反射層，號稱會讓音質更會細緻點，不過是否真有差別？我從未專心比較過，多年前收藏只當作是藝術品，很少拿出來把玩，如今這類 DCC 24K金 的唱片，反而更見其收藏價值，當初 DCC 重刻不少 Jazz（雖然也有流行樂），與如今 Classic Records 當初也有發行一系列24K金的 Jazz CD般，都屬於罕見絕版逸品，當初很多唱片都號稱鍍金，不過很大一部分是鍍銅的。
樂手表現已經不容我畫蛇添足，第9軌 You 在慢版的第8軌 The Song Is You 後，Shelly Manne 有偌換裝新的金頂電池般，粉紅小兔起勁敲鼓著，相當有勁。
這張錄音已屬不容質疑的好，有著 Roy DuNann 一貫的錄音高水準，他與 Rudy Van Gelder 的作品不同，前者提供各種樂器間的錄音有著相當平衡美的質感，連 Barney Kessel 的 guitar 都有相當的 Q 度，樂器的形體感不偌 RVG 般的肥美，但有時會有頭重腳輕的感覺，不過在後期 RVG 的錄音中，錄音的走向就有慢慢平衡地修正。
