Coleman Hawkins：The High And Mighty Hawk
這張擁有無與倫比的搖擺味，更有我最愛的 bass 手 Ray Brown，罕見與 Coleman Hawkins 一起合作演出 (雖然早期 Verve 時代，2人合作過幾次)，還有小號手 Buck Clayton，及鋼琴手 Hank Jones、鼓手 Mickey Sheen 的五重奏。
這張是今年2月日本東京行於 disk union 新宿中古中心所敗入，來這邊還是不時有意外驚喜，當初買這張，單單看封面，還以為這張是名不見經傳的小公司所發行的不知名版本，不過定睛一看，看到熟悉發行古典樂的 DECCA RECORDS 等字樣，在於版本罕見外，又加上 bass 手 是 Ray Brown，敗入價才 540日圓。真是便宜不說，我心想版本比較下，這張不可能會比我的原有 24bit 重刻版本好，不過基於版本收藏之故，還是買入。現在兩張聽完比較下，心想當初若不買下這張，可真算是遺憾啊！
這張的版本是1988年美國版的 LONDON (DECCA RECORDS) 所發行的版本，CD 裸片如下：
我當然不免和手上原有的 1999年日本版以 24bit重刻的版本 (POCJ-2680) 比較：

我不由得要說舊的 LONDON 版本，比後來新的日本24bit版本好上一些了，舊的 LONDON 版本雖然音量小聲了點，不過樂器的真實度，及音場自然度，比新的日本24bit版本好上一截，新的日本24bit版本感覺聲音細了點，早上11年發行的版本，聲音的傳真度整體還更好上一些，這樣的差別，更在於 Coleman Hawkins 一獻聲下，就更高下立判了。
下次日本行，若我又再見到舊版的話，我一定會再買一張來收藏的。這張沒有太快節奏的吵雜，有的是股淡淡的閒散心情，對這些老手來說，炒一盤色香味俱全的爵士樂大菜，應該是件不難的事，有這樣還不錯的錄音，更是像大餐再加罐啤酒，更令人滿足。

這張是相當具收藏價值的唱片，也是未見CD版本的珍貴錄音：TOCJ-50114 Eddie Costa：Memorial Concert
買的時候，不知道這張這樣精彩，還以為是 Eddie Costa 和 Coleman Hawkins、Clark Terry 等人合作的演出，原來是張向 Eddie Costa 致敬的唱片。
Eddie Costa 是 1962.7.28在紐約的快速道路因車禍死亡，享年31歲，這張唱片是 1962.10.9 的錄音。

以往我對 Eddie Costa 的唱片沒有太多的印象，雖然在他網站提到他的演奏風格：His percussive style and intense pounding left hand technique has rarely been duplicated even to this day. Known to some as "Eddie the Bear," he attacked the piano like a ferocious beast. It was said that he drove the beat enough on the piano that drums were an unnecessary commodity.
這幾天看來要再拿他的唱片來聽聽看，不過本張Memorial Concert 唱片，相當精彩，第一部分有著Clark Terry、Dick Hyman 等諸位老樂手的演出、有著相當平順的演出，不過比較精彩的是，第二部分的 Coleman Hawkins 的薩克斯風響起，想不到樂器質感還相當不錯，錄音還是具有相當的水準，我總覺得 Coleman Hawkins 在他人專輯的插花演出，比較 swing 點，反而在自己的專輯的表現，卻比較中規中矩，除此之外，第二部分及第4-5軌，還可以聽到難得聽到的 Sonny Clark 鋼琴演奏，不過第4軌結尾似乎突然斷掉，有點奇怪！。
這張唱片聽起來雖然有些平淡，樂手的表現更未有太過突出的個人表現，展現出相當平和的協調，展現出相當和諧的氣氛，實在是 EMI 這第三批的唱片，不容錯過的唱片之一。

Coleman Hawkins Encounters Ben Webster

CD 時，我一直好奇這張有所謂的完整版啊
，覺得有點恐怖，終未下手，因為原來CD版本僅有7軌，VME版本增加 Blues for Yolande 兩軌，這張新的版本竟有 17 軌，可見這位樂友於 Amazon 的留言

I always think re-issues are a bit of a trap for the unwary and the Hawkins and Webster 'Encounters' CD is a good example. Amazon has several editions at various prices and slightly different track listings. The original LP had seven tracks and some CDs carry two additional versions of the first track Blues for Yolande but this Essential Jazz Classics is the only one to have seventeen tracks and lasts for just over seventy-eight minutes. The additional tracks are from the same session in October 1957 with two omitting Hawkins and two omitting Webster. Of all the versions available this would seem the right one to get.
Having worked out this was the best CD I have to say I was disappointed with the contents. Webster and especially Hawkins I felt were just coasting and going through the motions of playing some relaxing but rather unremarkable jazz. Hawkins plays much better on Swingville (1960) or Blues Groove (1958) both sessions recorded by Rudy Van Gelder.
The original LP 'Encounters' tracks are blues oriented with plenty of meandering solos, the extra tracks from the session are similar. None of the seven original tracks lasted more than six and a half minutes, hardly enough time to deliver some creative improvisation though Hawkins, of course, can create wonderfully rich solos in no time at all. (`Tiny Bean' from the Blues Groove session has him playing a quite stunning bit of improvisation in less than two minutes).
'Encounters' is pleasant enough, mostly slow blues material but I thought it lacked anything original from either Hawkins or Webster.
